EIB commits to buy Water Tokens for vulnerable Communal Water Points and Schools under NRWB

Mzuzu, Malawi – The European Investment Bank (EIB) through the Malawi NRWB Water Efficiency Project has committed to buy water tokens worth €199,999 (about MK217 million) for vulnerable communal water points and schools under the Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) for a period of six months until August 2023.

The EIB’s support is a direct response to the Malawi Government and NRWB’s emergency response on the cholera outbreak affecting the country. In January 2023, the NRWB announced that it is reconnecting all disconnected kiosks and schools in an effort to provide them with a lifeline to access safe drinking water in the wake of the cholera outbreak.

The NRWB has since hailed EIB’s initiative to purchase the advance water tokens which is expected to have a significant impact on communities within the Board’s supply area.

“The EIB’s investment in advance water tokens is a significant step towards achieving universal access to safe drinking water. The bank’s commitment to providing these resources to struggling communities is a testament to its commitment to sustainable development and social justice.

“By providing communities with a reliable source of safe drinking water, the EIB is helping to improve the health and wellbeing of thousands of people and supporting the development of sustainable and resilient communities,” said NRWB Ag. CEO Francis Munthali.

The initiative is expected to benefit over 400 communal water points and 90 schools which have been facing challenges to pay for their water bills and sustain the water service.
